Meta Unveils Another Low-Priced VR Headset

While much of the attention in AR/VR headsets this year has revolved around Apple’s Vision Pro, most headset users cannot justify the four figure cost for that model. Meta, arguably the best known supplier of these products, has added yet another model to its line with its new Quest 3S, a $300 VR headset the company says is destined to replace its older Quest 2 as the go-to device for standalone and PVCR experiences.

Electronics DIY and teardown site iFixit recently took apart Meta’s latest headset in this video. The reviewer noted that some of the headset’s internal hardware is similar to that of the previous Quest 2. After some disassembly, the reviewer noted the camera was moved from the outer edge to the lower bracket, which simplified repair slightly. He added that some of other hardware appeared more durable than in the Quest 2, although the headset remains a relatively complex unit. But there were fewer cables than in the Quest 2, which further eased the teardown. The battery was also larger than in the previous model, although removing it requires unclipping tabs rather than screws.

Overall, the reviewer liked the Quest 3S for its somewhat improved repairability and cross-compatible parts with the Quest 2, though he concluded this was done to help keep down the headset’s cost. You can view the video here.
